If taxpayers are paid through payment apps for goods and services during the year, they may receive an IRS Form 1099-K for those transactions. For more information, go to IRS.gov/1099k.

Hobby or business: What people need to know if they have a side hustle
Hobbies and businesses are treated differently when it comes to filing taxes. The biggest difference between the two is that businesses operate to make a profit while hobbies are for pleasure or recreation.
Whether someone is having fun with a hobby or running a business, if they are paid through payment apps for goods and services during the year, they may receive an IRS Form 1099-K for those transactions. These payments are taxable income and must be reported on federal tax returns.
There are a few other things people should consider when deciding whether their project is a hobby or business. No single thing is the deciding factor. Taxpayers should review all the factors to make a good decision.
How taxpayers can decide if it's a hobby or business
These questions can help taxpayers decide whether they have a hobby or business:
Does the time and effort they put into the activity show they intend to make a profit?
Does the activity make a profit in some years, and if so, how much profit does it make?
Can they expect to make a future profit from the appreciation of the assets used in the activity?
Do they depend on income from the activity for their livelihood?
Are any losses due to circumstances beyond their control or are the losses normal for the startup phase of their type of business?
Do they change their methods of operation to improve profitability?
Do they carry out the activity in a businesslike manner and keep complete and accurate books and records?
Do the taxpayer and their advisors have the knowledge needed to carry out the activity as a successful business?
Whether taxpayers have a hobby or run a business, good recordkeeping throughout the year will help when they file taxes.

QUOTES:
FLEA MARKET FURNITURE FLIPPING: I've created a small side gig for myself refurbishing and selling furniture. I search flea markets and garage sales for quality furniture that has been worn out. I found out early on that I needed a good piece to start with, so I don't buy anything made of pressed board or plywood laminates. Only good hardwood for me. I also look for things that were well constructed when they were new and name brand manufacturers. I buy pieces that need to be reupholstered and/or refinished. My workshop is in my garage. I can sell on Craigslist. Sometimes it'll take a few weeks or even months to find the right buyer, but since most things I buy are cheap, it's no big deal to wait. Lately I've been making a few hundred dollars a month for something that I'd enjoy doing for free! Cecelia from Dollar Stretcher Tips
Making Money Off of Free Stuff: "At work, I've gained a reputation as a 'picker' of sorts. People know they can give me stuff that they no longer need or want. I sell some on eBay or Craigslist. I give other stuff to local thrift stores. And, yes, there are some things that just get tossed. It's turned into a neat little side gig. I'm making $100+ each week on things that other people just want to throw away!" Emily from Dollar Stretcher tips
QUOTE:
"Check out Fundrise, my favorite real estate investing platform. I’ve personally invested $810,000 in private real estate to take advantage of lower valuations and higher cap rates in the Sunbelt. Roughly $160,000 of my annual passive income comes from real estate. And passive income is the key to being free." Financial Samurai
Garage Sale Tips: Planning a garage or yard sale? Reuse your old "For Sale" or "For Rent" signs, yard signs advertising Vacation Bible Schools, or old political campaign signs, as long as they're not too flimsy. Just repaint them or securely fasten cardboard or paper over their surfaces. Write with permanent markers ("Sharpies") on them announcing your garage-, yard- or rummage sale, location, days and times. Be sure to write in BIG letters so drivers can read 'em. Sprinkle multiple signs around the neighborhood with directional arrows showing folks how to get to the sale. After the sale ends, make sure to take down all signs and save them for next time. For a table, we're using a very large, sturdy political sign we'd once tied on a fence. It holds a lot of folded clothes and merchandise. We merely turned it upside down (so its blank side faces up) and nailed it on two sawhorses. An old board can also work.
