Jobs/Income

"What we really want to do is what we are really meant to do. When we do what we are meant to do, money comes to us, doors open for us, we feel useful, and the work we do feels like play to us." - Julia Cameron

"Money will come when you are doing the right thing." - Mike Phillips

The author Cheryl Strayed on trusting your gut:

"Don’t do what you know on a gut level to be the wrong thing to do. Don’t stay when you know you should go or go when you know you should stay. Don’t fight when you should hold steady or hold steady when you should fight. Don’t focus on the short-term fun instead of the long-term fall out. Don’t surrender all your joy for an idea you used to have about yourself that isn’t true anymore. Don’t seek joy at all costs. I know it’s hard to know what to do when you have a conflicting set of emotions and desires, but it’s not as hard as we pretend it is. Saying it’s hard is ultimately a justification to do whatever seems like the easiest thing to do—have the affair, stay at that horrible job, end a friendship over a slight, keep loving someone who treats you terribly. I don’t think there’s a single dumbass thing I’ve done in my adult life that I didn’t know was a dumbass thing to do while I was doing it. Even when I justified it to myself—as I did every damn time—the truest part of me knew I was doing the wrong thing. Always. As the years pass, I’m learning how to better trust my gut and not do the wrong thing, but every so often I get a harsh reminder that I’ve still got work to do."

TIPS:

How much money do you need to earn to pay your bills and cover your essential spending?” This is your basic income required, and you should ensure you can continue to produce this amount.

Don't know what job to look for? Then start making a list of future goals, future ideas, future businesses, future jobs you are interested in or jobs that sound fun. keep a list of what you think your skills are (good for writing a resume), keep a list of companies you admire, or hobbies you are interested in. Go to conferences, read books, blogs, trade journals, articles, look for what other companies are doing and keep current on that, do volunteer work, talk to people that work in the trade you are interested in

Always Remember: Your Work is a Temporary Transactional Opportunity: Here’s the lesson in all of this: your employer isn’t your friend. Your employer isn’t your savior. Your stay at any given employer isn’t indefinite. Your employment is a time-limited transactional relationship, with you trading your time and skills for money. Fully capitalize on the transactional opportunity while you can, by saving as much as you can, because you don’t know how long the opportunity will last.

The Unspoken Rules that Could Cost You Thousands, with Gorick NgAfford Anything #313: Do you know the unspoken rules about how to get ahead in your workplace or industry (and as a result, how to earn more)? Unspoken rules, and the corresponding social norms, create a major impact in how we’re perceived in the workplace -- and therefore how often we’re promoted. But these rules are rarely taught. Managers expect us to understand these implicit rules, but they never explain them to us. How are we supposed to succeed? Gorick Ng, a career advisor at Harvard who specializes in working with first-generation, low-income students, shares his wisdom on navigating the workforce at all stages of your career. His advice can help you make more money, get promoted, and accelerate your ability to save and invest.
